In one part of the sermon the speaker stated that each singer in a choir has a unique voice. Independently, those voices ring out for all to hear, but together they form a beautiful harmony. While referring to music, there is definitely a deeper meaning.
As I listened to the words, my mind began to think about how a choir could be viewed as a team. In a choir each individual brings a distinct voice and a distinct way of singing. This is not unlike each member of a team. In a team, the individual members bring a set of unique skills. The Bible calls these skills gifts. No two individuals have the exact same skills or gifts.
While each one of these individuals working alone can make a difference, it pales in comparison to what they can do if they bring those gifts together. It is important for a leader to recognize each person’s gifts and provide the best opportunities for collaboration. In a sense the team leader is the choir director and his or her job is to create harmony from the many voices.
At the same time, it is up to each individual to honor and praise God for those gifts by trying not to be like others. The speaker talked about how the center of Western music development kept moving throughout its history. Composers would go to these centers to study and learn the latest techniques. They would then return to their own countries and write music in the styles they had learned. Over time, however, these composers started to find their own voice and produced music that was unique to their country and their own traditions. Like these composers, we need to look deep inside of us, identify our gifts, embrace our uniqueness, and use it to better our environment (whether it be a friend, a stranger, home, or work place).
